QHG - End point security applications
For the past few weeks, my Quest for the Holy Grail revolved around end point security. My old setup was the combination of Zone Alarm Pro 6.1 and CA Etrust Antivirus 7.1. Zone Alarm Pro started to bug me with some annoyances like forgetting that it's normal to find VNC on my system. Then came the Zone Alarm local privileges escalation vulnerability.
So I naturally gave Zone Alam Pro 7.0 a try. After a couple of days the picture was not good at all. First it would ask "Cancel or allow" every time my anti-virus download an update. But the worst was when it crashed during high network activity such as downloading popular files from BitTorrent network. This was not acceptable so I dumped Zone Alarm for good.
So I went back to square one to build a solution from ground up. Obviously I scratched the major bloated suites such as Norton Internet Security 2007, McAfee PC Protection Plus and others.
On my "I keep CA Etrust Antivirus 7.1" short list I had the following firewalls:
- Comodo a freeware firewall that received some good reviews.
- Outpost a really good shareware firewall.
- Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall a freeware/shareware firewall that seems to be popular.
On my "Let's start from scratch" short list I had the following suites or combinations:
- Eset NOD32 + Outpost
- Eset NOD32 + Comodo
- eEye Blink Personal
Logically I tried the freeware firewalls only solutions first. I started at the bottom of my list with the famous Sunbelt Kerio. Kerio is dumber than Zone Alarm when it comes to do on the fly learning. But once the setup is done it's not an annoyance. What really bugged me was that the Firewall interface froze as soon as I whipped out my good old BitTorrent client. It used 100% of the CPU but didn't crash.
Since Sunbelt Kerio was not reaching my quality levels I went to the next freeware firewall: Comodo. Comodo happens to be ranking first on Matousec's leak test.
